How to Ace the Video Job Interview

How to Ace the Video Job Interview Just when you thought you were prepared for the phone interview and the in-person interview, theres a new format to master. More and more companies are now using video job interviews, especially during the early screening rounds of the job interview process. For companies, the video job interview offers the convenience of the phone interview plus the bonus of being able to see you, even if youre based thousands of miles away. In a 2012 survey by staffing agency OfficeTeam, 63% of human resources managers said their company often conducts job interviews via video, up from just 14% one year ago.Companies handle video job interviews in different ways. Some may just invite a candidate to connect via Skype or a similar video chat software (Google Hangout, ooVoo, etc.) using their own webcam and computer. Other companies arrange to have the applicant visit a local video conference facility and connect from there. Still others have started using third-party video interview platforms and may even send an interviewee a webcam kit to use for the interview. In all of these scenarios, the key is to prepare and be comfortable with the video interview format so that technical and logistical challenges wont distract you from making a great impression. Here are our tips for acing the video job interview.Dress to ImpressDress for your  video  interview just as you would for an in-person interview. Focus on the top half as thats what your interviewer will see (perhaps even just your face depending on the set-up). However, I would advise wearing pants just in case you have to stand to adjust the camera or grab your water bottle. I once heard a horror story about a candidate who inadvertently offered his interviewer a glimpse of the boxers he was wearing under his navy suit jacket. Guess what? He did not get the job offer. As with an in-person interview, the safest bet is to dress conservatively. A black or dark-colored blazer or suit jacket over a crisp shirt is usually a great choi ce for both men and women. For some jobs, guys will want to go with a full suit-and-tie look.Do a camera test on your home webcam even if you will be going to a  video  conference facility for the actual interview (read on for more tips on how to use your camera test to prepare for the interview). This will allow you to see how you look and adjust wardrobe and hair/makeup accordingly to avoid the embarrassment of a gaping button or shiny forehead.Eliminate DistractionsIf you will be using your own webcam set-up, remember to carefully plan what will appear behind you in the frame. Try to arrange a quiet spot (turn off the ringer on your phone) with a plain backdrop and lock the door to keep the cat, baby, roommate out.Avoid an unprofessional or distracting background. You can adjust the camera to make sure your Justin Bieber poster and messy laundry pile arent visible behind you.You should also plan to shut down any other programs on your computer (especially any programs that might unexpectedly make noises or launch pop-ups to distract you during the interview). Make sure you arent running any other applications that use your webcam (log out of Skype if youll be using another program for the interview, for example) as they can interfere with your connection.Find Your Best Close-UpTake advantage of the opportunity to play director in advance. Adjust the lighting and camera angle, zoom in or out, make sure your microphone and speakers are at optimum levels, etc. If you will be using a  video  conference facility, experiment at home so you know your best set-up, then plan to arrive early so youll have time to adjust the on-site camera and audio preferences as needed.Lighting: The right lighting can make a big difference in how you look. Avoid overly bright fluorescent lights the effect can be harsh and some webcams will automatically compensate for too much brightness by shadowing your face. On the other hand, make sure theres enough light to see you clearly. Yo u dont want to look like youre peering out of the darkness at them. It can help to sit next to a lamp or fixture that lights you flatteringly from just above your head.Camera Angle: Play with the camera angle to find what works best for you. Avoid the up-the-nostrils cam and the forehead cam effects. Try sitting at a slight angle to the camera so you wont look like youre posing for a mug shot.Zoom In or Out: Find the right balance between too close (nobody needs to count the pores on your nose) and too far (make sure they can see your facial expressions).Technical Issues: Test all of the equipment out in advance to make sure that the webcam and audio settings will work well on the day of the interview.   Ask a friend to do a trial run with you to test the equipment and get some feedback on the wardrobe, backdrop, and other issues described above. On the day of the video interview, your best bet is to reboot your computer and do another a last-minute test to make sure everything is s till working properly.Make Love to the CameraOkay, not love exactly, but remember that looking into the webcam will translate to your  video  interviewer as direct eye contact. This will feel unnatural at first, which is part of why practice (see below) is so important. Looking into the eyes of the person in the  video  image will feel more natural, so it may help if you can move the window showing your interviewers face as close to your webcam as possible. This will make it seem most like a natural conversation with real eye contact. With many laptops, the built-in webcam is located in the center of the monitor screen. On desktop computers, the webcam is often perched on top of the monitor. Try this out in advance and have your friend tell you how the eye contact translates. If looking at the persons face doesnt translate well with your webcam set-up, you may just have to train yourself to look directly into the camera (and smile) if you really want to make a connection and give the impression of consistent, confident eye contact. Warning: If the video software also displays your image on the screen (most do), be careful not to get distracted by looking at your own image too much. This will look odd to the interviewer and will probably just distract you with self-consciousness when you should be thinking about your answers.   Also, be careful not to spend too much time looking at your notes or resume.   This is the equivalent of sitting in an in-person interview and staring down at the table instead of looking at the person youre speaking with.PracticeYou should be practicing your interview techniques already. However, if youre new to  video  job interviews, its even more important for you to make time to practice your delivery via video. Our training software Big Interviewallows you to practice with your webcam, record, review, and even share recordings for feedback with a friend or mentor. This approach will allow you to see exactly how you come across via  vi deo  conference and work on any weaknesses (eye contact, posture, vocal, answer content, etc.). Get StartedThis practice will also serve you well in preparing for upcoming in-person interviews. Recording and analyzing performance on video is a proven technique for improving your skills its a tactic that has been used for decades by professional athletes, public speakers, and performing artists. You could also arrange a Skype practice interview with a trusted friend or coach and ask for honest feedback.   Make sure you choose someone with some knowledge of job interviews and what employers look for.RememberInterviewing Rules Still ApplyDont forget to spend time preparing to answer the interview questions. Looking good on webcam is important, but your answers to the interview questions are even more important. Youll find tons of useful information on interview preparation on this blog and if you really want to ace the interview, spend some time on Big Interview reviewing the video cu rriculum and sample answers and preparing with the video practice interview tool. For an even more in depth treatment of video interviews, check out our Ultimate Guide to Video Interviews.Photo Credit: Dezz

Summer Jobs Might be Harder to Find This Summer

Summer Jobs Might be Harder to Find This Summer From lifeguarding at the nearby pool to cutting yards, most grown-ups have affectionate recollections of the late spring occupations of their childhood. In any case, is this ages old custom going the method of the dinosaur? An ongoing report from JPMorgan Chase (JPM) demonstrates that it might be. Lets investigate this wonder, alongside what it implies during the current years harvest of business looking for youngsters and youthful grown-ups. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-advertisement 1467144145037-0'); }); The 411 on Youth EmploymentJPMs January 2015 report, Building Skills Through Summer Jobs: Lessons From the Field, uncovers some troubled measurements: not exactly half (46 percent) of youngsters who searched out summer work in 2014 wound up getting occupations. This decay was predictable across about all industries. But its not simply absence of employments that is the issue. Its likewise a decrease in youth work by and large. In the course of recent y ears, there has been an almost 40 percent drop in summer youth business, with a little more than a fourth of youthful grown-ups holding paid summer occupations in late years. The viewpoint becomes much increasingly terrible dependent on discoveries that financially impeded youth, specifically, are significantly progressively affected by the business shortage. Its nothing unexpected that these not exactly idealistic figures drove JPMs Head of Workforce Initiatives Chauncy Lennon to finish up, Young individuals are confronting a work crisis.More Than a Loss Of JobsWhile the loss of employments in itself is disturbing, another factor is similarly agitating: the loss of abilities which would somehow be procured at work. All things considered, the articulation goes that the most ideal approach to find a new line of work is to have an occupation. Furthermore, with the American workforce previously confronting a lack of qualified laborers, this decrease in circumstances will just further slo w the pipeline of prepared representatives into the workforce.Unfortunately, the circumstance is something of an endless loop. While a portion of the activity slices may relate to the substitution of laborers by innovation and the recruiting of more seasoned works, a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Uncertain Futures: Youth Attachment to the Labor Market in the United States and New England, yields another explanation: a move toward employment opportunities which require more understanding and ability than the average high schooler brings to the table. Be that as it may, how might they be relied upon to build up these encounters and aptitudes without an occupation showcase ready to take a risk on them?Searching for SolutionsWhile in the past the legislature has supported abilities preparing programs, development of these activities has deteriorated as of late. As per JPM, the arrangement is for businesses to start structuring summer employments concentrated on helping American teenagers and youthful grown-ups gain the abilities they have to succeed. Keeping that in mind, JPM is contributing $5 million throughout the following two years in summer youth programs inside a few American urban areas to help the development of youth talent. But meanwhile what should youngsters do who are searching for work? Lennon suggests the significance of systems administration from loved ones to online occupation sheets. And keeping in mind that securing these positions may not be as basic an issue as opening up the Help Wanted segment of the paper, diligence offers huge settlements both for youthful grown-ups and the economy their ability and experience will fuel.

How to Set Goals Actually ACHIEVE Them in 2013 - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

How to Set Goals Actually ACHIEVE Them in 2013 - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach Many people feel as if theyre adrift in the world. They work hard, but they dont seem to get anywhere worthwhile. A key reason that they feel this way is that they havent spent enough time thinking about what they want from life, and havent set themselves formal goals. After all, would you set out on a major journey with no real idea of your destination? Probably not! Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn your vision of this future into reality. The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. Youll also quickly spot the distractions that can, so easily, lead you astray. Why Set Goals? Goal setting is used by top-level athletes, successful business-people and achievers in all fields. Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term  motivation. It focuses your acquisition of knowledge, and helps you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the very most of your life. By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals, and youll see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. You will also raise your  self-confidence, as you recognize your own ability and competence in achieving the goals that youve set. Starting to Set Personal Goals You set your goals on a number of levels: First you create your big picture of what you want to do with your life (or over, say, the next 10 years), and identify the large-scale goals that you want to achieve. Then, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit to reach your lifetime goals. Finally, once you have your plan, you start working on it to achieve these goals. This is why we start the process of goal setting by looking at your lifetime goals. Then, we work down to the things that you can do in, say, the next five years, then next year, next month, next week, and today, to start moving towards them. Step 1: Setting Lifetime Goals The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime (or at least, by a significant and distant age in the future). Setting lifetime goals gives you the overall perspective that shapes all other aspects of your decision making. To give a broad, balanced coverage of all important areas in your life, try to set goals in some of the following categories (or in other categories of your own, where these are important to you): Career   What level do you want to reach in your career, or what do you want to achieve? Financial   How much do you want to earn, by what stage? How is this related to your career goals? Education   Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and skills will you need to have in order to achieve other goals? Family   Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you going to be a good parent? How do you want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family? Artistic   Do you want to achieve any artistic goals? Attitude   Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way that you behave that upsets you? (If so, set a goal to improve your behavior or find a solution to the problem.) Physical   Are there any athletic goals that you want to achieve, or do you want good health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this? Pleasure   How do you want to enjoy yourself? (You should ensure that some of your life is for you!) Public Service Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, how? Spend some time  brainstorming  these things, and then select one or more goals in each category that best reflect what you want to do. Then consider trimming again so that you have a small number of really significant goals that you can focus on. As you do this, make sure that the goals that you have set are ones that you genuinely want to achieve, not ones that your parents, family, or employers might want. (If you have a partner, you probably want to consider what he or she wants however, make sure that you also remain true to yourself!) Step 2: Setting Smaller Goals Once you have set your lifetime goals, set a five-year plan of smaller goals that you need to complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan. Then create a one-year plan, six-month plan, and a one-month plan of progressively smaller goals that you should reach to achieve your lifetime goals. Each of these should be based on the previous plan. Then create a daily  To-Do List  of things that you should do today to work towards your lifetime goals. At an early stage, your smaller goals might be to read books and gather information on the achievement of your higher level goals. This will help you to improve the quality and realism of your goal setting. Finally review your plans, and make sure that they fit the way in which you want to live your life. Tip: If you feel that youre not paying enough attention to certain areas of your life, youll find articles on  The Wheel of Life  and the  Life/Career Rainbow  useful. Staying on Course Once youve decided on your first set of goals, keep the process going by reviewing and updating your To-Do List on a daily basis. Periodically review the longer term plans, and modify them to reflect your changing priorities and experience. (A good way of doing this is to schedule regular, repeating reviews using a computer-based diary.) SMART Goals A useful way of making goals more powerful is to use the SMART mnemonic. While there are plenty of variants (some of which weve included in parenthesis), SMART usually stands for: S   Specific (or Significant). M   Measurable (or Meaningful). A   Attainable (or Action-Oriented). R   Relevant (or Rewarding). T   Time-bound (or Trackable). For example, instead of having To sail around the world as a goal, its more powerful to say To have completed my trip around the world by December 31, 2015. Obviously, this will only be attainable if a lot of preparation has been completed beforehand! Further Goal Setting Tips The following broad guidelines will help you to set effective, achievable goals: State each goal as a positive statement  Express your goals positively â€" Execute this technique well is a much better goal than Dont make this stupid mistake. Be precise:  Set precise goals, putting in dates, times and amounts so that you can measure achievement. If you do this, youll know exactly when you have achieved the goal, and can take complete satisfaction from having achieved it. Set priorities  When you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by having too many goals, and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones. Write goals down  This crystallizes them and gives them more force. Keep operational goals small  Keep the low-level goals that youre working towards small and achievable. If a goal is too large, then it can seem that you are not making progress towards it. Keeping goals small and incremental gives more opportunities for reward. Set performance goals, not outcome goals   You should take care to set goals over which you have as much control as possible. It can be quite dispiriting to fail to achieve a personal goal for reasons beyond your control! In business, these reasons could be bad business environments or unexpected effects of government policy. In sport, they could include poor judging, bad weather, injury, or just plain bad luck. If you base your goals on personal performance, then you can keep control over the achievement of your goals, and draw satisfaction from them. Set realistic goals  Its important to set goals that you can achieve. All sorts of people (for example, employers, parents, media, or society) can set unrealistic goals for you. They will often do this in ignorance of your own desires and ambitions. Its also possible to set goals that are too difficult because you might not appreciate either the obstacles in the way, or understand quite how much skill you need to develop to achieve a particular level of performance. Achieving Goals Mind Tools on Goal Setting: Goal Setting Main Page Personal Goal Setting Lockes Goal Setting Theory Golden Rules of Goal Setting Backward Goal Setting Making New Year Resolutions Using Well-Formed Outcomes in Goal Setting When youve achieved a goal, take the time to enjoy the satisfaction of having done so. Absorb the implications of the goal achievement, and observe the progress that youve made towards other goals. If the goal was a significant one, reward yourself appropriately. All of this helps you build the self-confidence you deserve. With the experience of having achieved this goal, review the rest of your goal plans: If you achieved the goal too easily, make your next goal harder. If the goal took a dispiriting length of time to achieve, make the next goal a little easier. If you learned something that would lead you to change other goals, do so. If you noticed a deficit in your skills despite achieving the goal, decide whether to set goals to fix this. Feed lessons learned back into your goal setting. Remember too that your goals will change as time goes on. Adjust them regularly to reflect growth in your knowledge and experience, and if goals do not hold any attraction any longer, consider letting them go. Goal Setting Example For her New Years Resolution, Susan has decided to think about what she really wants to do with her life. Her lifetime goals are as follows: Career   To be managing editor of the magazine that I work for. Artistic   To keep working on my illustration skills. Ultimately I want to have my own show in our downtown gallery. Physical   To run a marathon. Now that Susan has listed her lifetime goals, she then breaks down each one into smaller, more manageable goals. Lets take a closer look at how she might break down her lifetime career goal becoming managing editor of her magazine: Five-year goal:  Become deputy editor. One-year goal:  Volunteer for projects that the current Managing Editor is heading up. Six-month goal:  Go back to school and finish my journalism degree. One-month goal:  Talk to the current managing editor to determine what skills are needed to do the job. One-week goal:  Book the meeting with the Managing Editor. As you can see from this example, breaking big goals down into smaller, more manageable goals makes it far easier to see how the goal will get accomplished. The Other Hardest Question How Can I Help You

The Other Hardest Question How Can I Help You When I started networking the right way I really understood the importance and impact of a well-crafted elevator pitch (aka, me in 30 seconds, etc.). The question this answers is what do you do, or tell me about yourself, or something like that. It was really hard for me to answer with something really concise, targeted, full of information, and leaving you with a desire to learn more about me I eventually got comfortable with my response but there was that other hard question How can I help you? Last week I was asked, in an e-mail, from one of the most connected people on the planet how can I help you? I had to swallow my pride, which usually wants me to say oh, Im ok, but thanks for offering! You see, in the real spirit of networking, Vincent wants to help. And he usually can. So here was my response (in e-mail): How you can help me always a funny question. Let me lay out what my goals are for this year: 1. Get 73 more coach/resume writer partners. 2. Get more associations using JJ like IEEE-USA is (recognize this cool stuff: http://careers.ieeeusa.org/ ?) 3. Get some partnerships with outplacement firms nailed down. 4. Get more users on JibberJobber. 5. Get more PR. I just interviewed with NPR today (Vincent, this was a CT station: http://www.cpbn.org/wnpr-programming-schedule (some Sunday (I’m not sure which one) at 3pm)), which was awesome. I’ll be on NPR in SF in February†¦ and would love to get more radio interviews. Also, newspaper coverage, especially the kind that would make people turn their heads (WSJ, NYT, etc.). Of course, this is all pie in the sky (know that I’ll work my tail off to achieve it this year), so if nothing else, just getting Mr. T to do a 3 minute video where he says JibberJobber instead of JibberJabber would be great It wasnt easy to lay all of these out (and less easy to put it here, as now Im making my path public), but Ive come to realize that people want to help, and they can help, but they need to know what we need. Check out Vincents response, which blew me away: Im actually on the phone with someone who knows Mr. T. She says shell call him tomorrow. Theres more to the story, as this e-mail went to two people (it was a virtual introduction). The other person, Bill Sobel, probably knows half of the whos-who in NYC, and he replied back with a virtual introduction to a vice president of one of the three largest outplacement firms in the world. Just knowing how to answer, with SPECIFICS, was the key. So lets assume you know how to respond to the question tell me about yourself, how exactly would you respond to the question what can I/we do for you? Put it in the comment box below! The Military Career Woman on Veterans Day

The Military Career Woman on Veterans Day Today  we are paying tribute to the working women  7,000 miles away from home, living in barracks in the desert and  fighting terrorists to safeguard our country’s independence.   I cant begin to imagine what  this profession is like but I greatly admire the women rising the ranks in a male-dominated profession.    Currently, 15% of service members are women and the number of female veterans has doubled in the last decade.   There are now 1.8 million  female veterans who have  served in U.S. military. I am loving companies like Applebees and Ashley Furniture  that are offering free meals and free furniture delivery for veterans this week.   Is your company providing special benefits to veterans?   If not, what could you do to thank these brave men and women? If you serve or have served, THANK YOU! (Photo by: The U.S. Army, Minot Air Force Base)

How To Write A Resume With A Lot Of Time Between Jobs

How To Write A Resume With A Lot Of Time Between JobsPeople sometimes put off the decision to write a resume when they have lots of other things to do. Their time is very valuable, and they want to make sure that they use it well in the way that will best benefit them. Sometimes people delay a resume simply because they lack the time to get it done. However, it doesn't have to be this way. There are plenty of opportunities to continue working on your job search. You can spend a little time each day doing something different. Maybe it's planning a trip with your family or going to a seminar for your favorite charity. Whatever you choose, keep the times you are spending those efforts as busy time as possible. If you're going to be idle for some time, just make sure you don't call off work so that you can do nothing at all.Time is certainly precious and there are times when your time may be very important. Some people write their resumes and wait until the last minute to take action. Thi s may not seem like much of a sacrifice, but it is important. You may find that it may take a while for your resume to come to you, and you want to be sure that you get the job you want. When you find the job that you want, you should write your resume right away. If you wait until later in the process, you may find that your resume won't be complete. Writing a resume right away will allow you to understand what is included in the job description and what must be included in your resume. The next time you have an opportunity to take a few minutes to think about your work experience, you should write about it. If you don't feel comfortable, don't worry; just keep it to yourself. If you want to appear confident in the manner in which you present yourself, you will need to portray this self-confidence through your resume. When you are ready to submit your resume, make sure that you start early. Many employers want resumes submitted within a few days of the interview. This is a requirement of many companies, so the sooner you submit your resume, the sooner it can be considered. You can even send in a resume before the deadline, but make sure that you get a second opinion from a professional resume writer. If you start early, you will avoid the frustration of having to re-write your resume when you realize that it wasn't written correctly. Even if you get a callback and get the job, there is no guarantee that you'll get the pay that you deserve. Waiting until the last minute to write your resume may make it difficult to get the job, but it is better than having it piles up in your inbox every time you get a phone call from a potential employer.Keeping busy is a good way to keep writing a resume with a lot of time between jobs. Take advantage of every opportunity to finish and send out your resume. You'll be glad you did when you get the job.

Why is this so?First of all, the free sample resume is free because no one is paying for it. It was simply produced for the purpose of getting people interested in seeing more. The great thing about the samples is that you get to see a sample of what a perfect sample resume looks like. This means that you can see if you have any possible interest in the kind of work that the resume is suggesting for you.
