The Other Hardest Question How Can I Help You

The Other Hardest Question How Can I Help You When I started networking the right way I really understood the importance and impact of a well-crafted elevator pitch (aka, me in 30 seconds, etc.). The question this answers is what do you do, or tell me about yourself, or something like that. It was really hard for me to answer with something really concise, targeted, full of information, and leaving you with a desire to learn more about me I eventually got comfortable with my response but there was that other hard question How can I help you? Last week I was asked, in an e-mail, from one of the most connected people on the planet how can I help you? I had to swallow my pride, which usually wants me to say oh, Im ok, but thanks for offering! You see, in the real spirit of networking, Vincent wants to help. And he usually can. So here was my response (in e-mail): How you can help me always a funny question. Let me lay out what my goals are for this year: 1. Get 73 more coach/resume writer partners. 2. Get more associations using JJ like IEEE-USA is (recognize this cool stuff: http://careers.ieeeusa.org/ ?) 3. Get some partnerships with outplacement firms nailed down. 4. Get more users on JibberJobber. 5. Get more PR. I just interviewed with NPR today (Vincent, this was a CT station: http://www.cpbn.org/wnpr-programming-schedule (some Sunday (I’m not sure which one) at 3pm)), which was awesome. I’ll be on NPR in SF in February†¦ and would love to get more radio interviews. Also, newspaper coverage, especially the kind that would make people turn their heads (WSJ, NYT, etc.). Of course, this is all pie in the sky (know that I’ll work my tail off to achieve it this year), so if nothing else, just getting Mr. T to do a 3 minute video where he says JibberJobber instead of JibberJabber would be great It wasnt easy to lay all of these out (and less easy to put it here, as now Im making my path public), but Ive come to realize that people want to help, and they can help, but they need to know what we need. Check out Vincents response, which blew me away: Im actually on the phone with someone who knows Mr. T. She says shell call him tomorrow. Theres more to the story, as this e-mail went to two people (it was a virtual introduction). The other person, Bill Sobel, probably knows half of the whos-who in NYC, and he replied back with a virtual introduction to a vice president of one of the three largest outplacement firms in the world. Just knowing how to answer, with SPECIFICS, was the key. So lets assume you know how to respond to the question tell me about yourself, how exactly would you respond to the question what can I/we do for you? Put it in the comment box below! The Military Career Woman on Veterans Day

The Military Career Woman on Veterans Day Today  we are paying tribute to the working women  7,000 miles away from home, living in barracks in the desert and  fighting terrorists to safeguard our country’s independence.   I cant begin to imagine what  this profession is like but I greatly admire the women rising the ranks in a male-dominated profession.    Currently, 15% of service members are women and the number of female veterans has doubled in the last decade.   There are now 1.8 million  female veterans who have  served in U.S. military. I am loving companies like Applebees and Ashley Furniture  that are offering free meals and free furniture delivery for veterans this week.   Is your company providing special benefits to veterans?   If not, what could you do to thank these brave men and women? If you serve or have served, THANK YOU! (Photo by: The U.S. Army, Minot Air Force Base)

How To Write A Resume With A Lot Of Time Between Jobs

How To Write A Resume With A Lot Of Time Between JobsPeople sometimes put off the decision to write a resume when they have lots of other things to do. Their time is very valuable, and they want to make sure that they use it well in the way that will best benefit them. Sometimes people delay a resume simply because they lack the time to get it done. However, it doesn't have to be this way. There are plenty of opportunities to continue working on your job search. You can spend a little time each day doing something different. Maybe it's planning a trip with your family or going to a seminar for your favorite charity. Whatever you choose, keep the times you are spending those efforts as busy time as possible. If you're going to be idle for some time, just make sure you don't call off work so that you can do nothing at all.Time is certainly precious and there are times when your time may be very important. Some people write their resumes and wait until the last minute to take action. Thi s may not seem like much of a sacrifice, but it is important. You may find that it may take a while for your resume to come to you, and you want to be sure that you get the job you want. When you find the job that you want, you should write your resume right away. If you wait until later in the process, you may find that your resume won't be complete. Writing a resume right away will allow you to understand what is included in the job description and what must be included in your resume. The next time you have an opportunity to take a few minutes to think about your work experience, you should write about it. If you don't feel comfortable, don't worry; just keep it to yourself. If you want to appear confident in the manner in which you present yourself, you will need to portray this self-confidence through your resume. When you are ready to submit your resume, make sure that you start early. Many employers want resumes submitted within a few days of the interview. This is a requirement of many companies, so the sooner you submit your resume, the sooner it can be considered. You can even send in a resume before the deadline, but make sure that you get a second opinion from a professional resume writer. If you start early, you will avoid the frustration of having to re-write your resume when you realize that it wasn't written correctly. Even if you get a callback and get the job, there is no guarantee that you'll get the pay that you deserve. Waiting until the last minute to write your resume may make it difficult to get the job, but it is better than having it piles up in your inbox every time you get a phone call from a potential employer.Keeping busy is a good way to keep writing a resume with a lot of time between jobs. Take advantage of every opportunity to finish and send out your resume. You'll be glad you did when you get the job.

Free Sample Resume - How To Find Free Sample Resumes For A Free Sample Resume

Free Sample Resume - How To Find Free Sample Resumes For A Free Sample ResumeWhile you may think that the benefits of a free sample resume are outweighed by the cost of such products, in fact the free samples you will find online for free may be just as useful as their paid counterparts. Why is this so?First of all, the free sample resume is free because no one is paying for it. It was simply produced for the purpose of getting people interested in seeing more. The great thing about the samples is that you get to see a sample of what a perfect sample resume looks like. This means that you can see if you have any possible interest in the kind of work that the resume is suggesting for you. If you do, then you can go ahead and purchase it from the company who makes it. You don't have to waste your time with someone else's creation.Of course, the free sample resume is not your only option. In fact, there are hundreds of samples available for free that you can get online and start creating your own. You may have to spend some time to read through them, but the idea of getting many different samples will help you to see how each company's template differs from the others. In addition, it is always a good idea to read the sample resumes on a regular basis. Because of the importance of getting your resume to be noticed, you should try to check back on a regular basis to see if any changes have been made to the company that sold you the sample. One of the most important things that you want to make sure that you include in your resume is your contact information. Because the company that sells you the free sample resume is not going to sell your contact information to anyone else, they are not going to give you the information that you need to give your prospective employer any indication of the kind of work that you are qualified for. If you can't stand to leave your own job application lying around, then don't get a free sample. Make sure that you are looking for work as much as possible when you are trying to obtain new employment. There are hundreds of companies that sell sample resumes online that you can get a hold of for free. If you want to gain some knowledge of how a perfect resume looks, then these are the resources that you need to get hold of.

Abraham Lincolns Time Management Legacy

Abraham Lincolns Time Management Legacy Lincoln Was Right: Good (Leftover) Things Come to Those Who Wait by David Ellis, Content and Community Manager at YouTern  â€œGood things come to those who wait. But only those things left behind by those who hustle.” â€"                 Abraham Lincoln Recently, I was watching Daniel Tosh, the uber-snarky host of  â€œTosh.0”, doing stand-up on Comedy Central. During one of his signature rants Tosh was berating un-married people, saying: “You get up around noon… go grab a burrito… hit the gym and call it a full day!” I heard this and I immediately thought: “Holy crap! He’s watching me!” Tosh’s scenario used to describe many of my Saturdays to the exact detail… many more than I’m happy to admit, actually. A burrito may not be involved in everyone’s lazy Saturday, but each of us has unproductive patterns we follow; call them a “habit”… a “lifestyle”… perhaps a “rut”. And they don’t just occur on weekends. In school we view our lives in quarters or semesters. We segment the working world into “ X days until Friday”, months or fiscal quarters. The hours and days fly by in a blur as we keep one eye toward the arrival of the next temporal milestone. At the same time, we have a “bucket list”… either just some ideas or wishes; maybe we watched the classic movie and created an actual list for ourselves…a list that we’d get to if we “just had more time”. Most of us, however, allow our bucket list to die a lonely death. We say to ourselves, “I don’t have enough time”. A sad excuse, really. The result:  missing out on goals and accomplishments by wasting time… by not hustling, as Mr. Lincoln might put it. Among the items on my personal bucket list is to become more fluent in Spanish… far beyond the Spanglish that I’ve currently mastered. I have a copy of Rosetta Stone’s Spanish language lessons. I just never seem to have time to put toward using the lessons. I feel like I’m always working, and then it’s time to go to bed. Like many of us, I seem to have no time for crossing stuff off my bucket list. What if we challenged ourselves to look at where our extra time goes? What do you think we’d find? I bet the results might embarrass most of us. Let’s do it anyway! Let’s learn where our “non-hustle” time is spent! For a week… or even better, for a month, diligently record your activities. Note how much time you spend on social media… reading non-work-related blogs… sitting in redundant meetings… socializing with co-workers. At home, track the time spent on reality television, gaming and lounging until noon on weekends. The record-keeping doesn’t have to be highly detailed… just estimate the amount of time spent for each activity not related to self-improvement, self-learning, helping others… or crossing an item or two off the bucket list. At the end of this exercise, I bet we’ll be amazed. I bet we’ll find tens, maybe hundreds, of hours spent in a manner we aren’t too proud of now. In my case, I could be using that wasted time to achieve my foreign language goal. Or I could read industry-related blog posts to increase my skills. I could participate in more Twitter Chats and strengthen my network and my personal brand. There are plenty of online courses I could take in about an hour a day. In short… instead of whatever it is I’ll find I was wasting time on… I could follow Mr. Lincoln’s advice, and hustle. For those of you who take up this challenge, come back to this post and tell everyone how much time you found for yourself… time that you could now re-focus much more productively. Let us know what life-satisfying activity you’re now going to assign to those previously wasted hours. I believe “Honest Abe” was right, that to those who hustle come the best things in life. I’m going to find out how much time I get back, that I can re-direct toward improving my life. I’m going to add more hustle… and perhaps find even more time for burritos, too. (Sorry, Tosh). To learn more about David Ellis, follow him on Twitter!

Go On Job Interviews to Get Started With Your Job Search - Hallie Crawford

Go On Job Interviews to Get Started With Your Job Search When I start the coaching process with a new client, I am often asked, “when can I start applying for new jobs and looking for new opportunities?” I typically ask them to wait a few weeks until we’ve gotten into the meat of our ideal career program, but tell them they don’t have to wait very long. Looking for job openings in your possible new field of interest will help you learn about the industry and what is out there. This will give you momentum and get you back in the job search mode. Even going on interviews will help you discover what you like and dislike about the fields you’re looking into. Getting started with you job search can give you clarity about your direction. It can also make you feel better because you’re taking action, and not just thinking about it. When you find positions that look appealing to you, it can give you hope that something better is out there for you. I’ve had this happen to many of my clients. They come back to a coaching session with job openings they’re excited about and it makes a dramatic difference in their job search. They can see that there are jobs out there they would enjoy. I’m not suggesting that you go on interviews for jobs that you’re not interested in, wasting everybody’s time. I’m suggesting going on interviews for jobs you think you are interested in, even if you’re not 100% sure. The important thing to know is, you don’t have to wait until you’re 100% clear on your career direction before going on job interviews. Job interviewing is a way to help clarify if a job is a fit for you, and it gives you job interviewing practice if nothing else. It is better to have several job interviews under your belt before you’re interviewing for your dream job. You’ll be better prepared and more confident. Atlanta Career Coach
