Abraham Lincolns Time Management Legacy
Abraham Lincolns Time Management Legacy Lincoln Was Right: Good (Leftover) Things Come to Those Who Wait by David Ellis, Content and Community Manager at YouTern âGood things come to those who wait. But only those things left behind by those who hustle.â â" Abraham Lincoln Recently, I was watching Daniel Tosh, the uber-snarky host of âTosh.0â, doing stand-up on Comedy Central. During one of his signature rants Tosh was berating un-married people, saying: âYou get up around noon⦠go grab a burrito⦠hit the gym and call it a full day!â I heard this and I immediately thought: âHoly crap! Heâs watching me!â Toshâs scenario used to describe many of my Saturdays to the exact detail⦠many more than Iâm happy to admit, actually. A burrito may not be involved in everyoneâs lazy Saturday, but each of us has unproductive patterns we follow; call them a âhabitâ⦠a âlifestyleâ⦠perhaps a ârutâ. And they donât just occur on weekends. In school we view our lives in quarters or semesters. We segment the working world into â X days until Fridayâ, months or fiscal quarters. The hours and days fly by in a blur as we keep one eye toward the arrival of the next temporal milestone. At the same time, we have a âbucket listâ⦠either just some ideas or wishes; maybe we watched the classic movie and created an actual list for ourselvesâ¦a list that weâd get to if we âjust had more timeâ. Most of us, however, allow our bucket list to die a lonely death. We say to ourselves, âI donât have enough timeâ. A sad excuse, really. The result: missing out on goals and accomplishments by wasting time⦠by not hustling, as Mr. Lincoln might put it. Among the items on my personal bucket list is to become more fluent in Spanish⦠far beyond the Spanglish that Iâve currently mastered. I have a copy of Rosetta Stoneâs Spanish language lessons. I just never seem to have time to put toward using the lessons. I feel like Iâm always working, and then itâs time to go to bed. Like many of us, I seem to have no time for crossing stuff off my bucket list. What if we challenged ourselves to look at where our extra time goes? What do you think weâd find? I bet the results might embarrass most of us. Letâs do it anyway! Letâs learn where our ânon-hustleâ time is spent! For a week⦠or even better, for a month, diligently record your activities. Note how much time you spend on social media⦠reading non-work-related blogs⦠sitting in redundant meetings⦠socializing with co-workers. At home, track the time spent on reality television, gaming and lounging until noon on weekends. The record-keeping doesnât have to be highly detailed⦠just estimate the amount of time spent for each activity not related to self-improvement, self-learning, helping others⦠or crossing an item or two off the bucket list. At the end of this exercise, I bet weâll be amazed. I bet weâll find tens, maybe hundreds, of hours spent in a manner we arenât too proud of now. In my case, I could be using that wasted time to achieve my foreign language goal. Or I could read industry-related blog posts to increase my skills. I could participate in more Twitter Chats and strengthen my network and my personal brand. There are plenty of online courses I could take in about an hour a day. In short⦠instead of whatever it is Iâll find I was wasting time on⦠I could follow Mr. Lincolnâs advice, and hustle. For those of you who take up this challenge, come back to this post and tell everyone how much time you found for yourself⦠time that you could now re-focus much more productively. Let us know what life-satisfying activity youâre now going to assign to those previously wasted hours. I believe âHonest Abeâ was right, that to those who hustle come the best things in life. Iâm going to find out how much time I get back, that I can re-direct toward improving my life. Iâm going to add more hustle⦠and perhaps find even more time for burritos, too. (Sorry, Tosh). Go On Job Interviews to Get Started With Your Job Search - Hallie Crawford
Go On Job Interviews to Get Started With Your Job Search When I start the coaching process with a new client, I am often asked, âwhen can I start applying for new jobs and looking for new opportunities?â I typically ask them to wait a few weeks until weâve gotten into the meat of our ideal career program, but tell them they donât have to wait very long. Looking for job openings in your possible new field of interest will help you learn about the industry and what is out there. This will give you momentum and get you back in the job search mode. Even going on interviews will help you discover what you like and dislike about the fields youâre looking into. Getting started with you job search can give you clarity about your direction. It can also make you feel better because youâre taking action, and not just thinking about it. When you find positions that look appealing to you, it can give you hope that something better is out there for you. Iâve had this happen to many of my clients. They come back to a coaching session with job openings theyâre excited about and it makes a dramatic difference in their job search. They can see that there are jobs out there they would enjoy. Iâm not suggesting that you go on interviews for jobs that youâre not interested in, wasting everybodyâs time. Iâm suggesting going on interviews for jobs you think you are interested in, even if youâre not 100% sure. The important thing to know is, you donât have to wait until youâre 100% clear on your career direction before going on job interviews. Job interviewing is a way to help clarify if a job is a fit for you, and it gives you job interviewing practice if nothing else. It is better to have several job interviews under your belt before youâre interviewing for your dream job. Youâll be better prepared and more confident. Atlanta Career Coach

5 Statement Errors People Often Make When Writing Resumes
5 Statement Errors People Often Make When Writing ResumesWhich of the following statements about resume writing style is not accurate to apply. Well, here is what I have gathered out of the several mistakes people usually make when writing resumes. Not all resume writers make these mistakes but here is what I know that works best in this regard.Having different format. As mentioned before, an applicant is looking for a particular work experience, educational attainment, and professional awards. Making the same statement about resume writing style is not accurate to make that statement. It is true that we all have different ideas and needs but the applicant also wants to know your resume has one objective: he should like you as a person. Make sure you emphasize on his qualifications.Appearing too opinionated. As an applicant, you are probably very confused at times by some unknown facts about yourself. However, being overly critical and judgmental on yourself may create your interview er looks off. You are hired to do a job not to be critical and judgmental. Avoid appearing judgmental because it can make you seem less likable and the employer will not want that.Past employment only. Remember, everyone has their own life story and past employment. A resume must highlight why you are better than any applicant who applies for the job.Resumes can be great or terrible depending on what you put into them. If you are not very specific about your qualifications then it can be easy to skip this part of your resume and not get noticed.Misapplying statements. Some employers take the negative, negative statements about the applicant's skills and experience and disqualify them. The good news is that you don't need to include statements like that; you just need to make sure the information is there and the resume stands out.Statements like these are just simple words that you can add your own feel into. Regardless if you believe in the 'applicant first' mentality or not, it is up to you to make sure your resume has everything in the application.

This Map Shows Where Millennials Really Make the Most Money
This Map Shows Where Millennials Really Make the Most Money For many Americans, the years in your 20s and early 30s are a time to pull up stakes and head off someplace new â" where, with luck, youâll make your fortune. But where to go? For ambitious millennials, the first places that pop to mind could be California or New York, where industries like Hollywood, tech and finance seem to mint 20-something millionaires overnight. And if fame or tycoon-style riches are really what youâre after, thatâs probably still your best bet. But most of Americans arenât after those things at all. What they actually want is a solid income â" and a comfortable life. And if thatâs what youâre seeking, your perfect place may be completely different. To get a sense of which states offer young workers the best prospects now, we pulled the most recent Census data showing median household earnings for the age cohort that most closely aligns with the millennial generation â" ages 25 to 44. Overall, it showed what you might expect. The District of Columbia â" with a median income of more than $87,200 â" topped the list. Other coastal states like Massachusetts ($86,600), Washington ($74,300), California ($71,900), and New York ($71,200) werenât far behind. The problem is, these places can be expensive to live. Sometimes insanely so. Earning $70,000 or more doesnât seem that great when the median home price is more than $500,000. So to better account for the cost of living â" and get a real sense of which states offer millennials the best economic prospects â" we used the Bureau of Economic Analysisâs regional price parity calculations to adjust those state-by-state earnings numbers. As you can see when you scroll over our map, above, the places where millennials actually achieve a higher standard of living are a lot different than the initial set. While young workers in some coastal states like Massachusetts and Virginia remain among the best off, those in places like New York and California fall far behind. Meanwhile, young people living in places like the Dakotas and Wyoming â" inexpensive areas that have been benefited from a decade-long energy job boom â" seem rich by comparison.

Same use of data, different work environmentwith each requiring different kinds of interaction with clients and/or coworkers.CaretakingIf youre an SF (or even a PF), you might be best suited to be able to use your people-based decision-making for a purpose. ES could work in nutrition or cosmetology, talking to people all day and helping them to be their best. IS could do more one-on-one jobs like social work or veterinary work. Same people skills, fewer people to interact with.TheoryIf youre both intuitive and data-oriented (NT), youll want to work with data where you take in the information, interpret it theoretically, then apply it. ES could make great managers, salespeople, or real estate agents. IS could do very well in software, engineering, and other technology jobs.EmpathyYoure a people person. More oriented towards your intuition and your sense of what is going on than hard data or judgments (NF). ES will do great in health care or the tafelgeschirr industries. IS could work in library science or designworking more with objects and spaces and ideas than directly with people, but using the same traits.Whatever you turn out to be, its always best to know thyselfthoroughly and honestlyin hopes of determining which careers would bring out the best in you.
